Breed Information

Before you adopt a Nordic breed dog, there are a few things you should know.

What Nordic breed dogs are:

  • Big shedders. Expect fur with everything including meals!
  • Smart, independent thinkers
  • Mischievous, especially when bored
  • Houdini's - expert escape artists
  • Stubborn
  • Comedians. They can be very comical. A sense of humor is a must.
  • Inclined to chase things that move fast
  • Prey driven, will consider small animals as prey and have known to kill sheep and goats
  • Lousy guard dogs
  • Yes you may think they look like wolves, but they are not wolves.

You have to have a sense of humor to own a Nordic breed dog!  They can be crazy at times! Sometimes they even seem to be plotting their next big escape, digging, or act of destruction somewhere in the house or yard!

Nordic breed dogs are known for getting out of crates, digging, climbing fences, and being destructive when feeling abandoned or bored. Strong, high fencing and even closed kennels are sometimes needed to contain these dogs. Ideas on securing fencing.

Additionally, Nordic breed dogs often have a high prey drive. This means they like to chase things that move fast (i.e. livestock, cats, squirrels and other small animals including dogs). The Nordic breed dog can injure or even kill a small animal if they catch it.

Of the Nordic breeds, NorSled specializes specifically in Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, and Samoyeds. This discussion is intended for individuals new to these breeds in order to determine the answer to the question: “Is one of our dogs the right dog for you?”

Yes, they are cute puppies and grow up to be beautiful dogs but they are NOT dire wolves!  Getting one because of popular TV shows and "dire wolves" is just not a good reason!   Huskies are a lot of work and many people cannot be bothered or simply do not have the time to commit to having a husky.  Hence many are ending up at shelters totally untrained and are being euthanized, so please think carefully and do your research!

Once you have done your research and are positive this is the breed for you, we are happy to find the right dog for your lifestyle.
