Sasha has received a new name for her new life -- she is now Takotna, after the small native village in Alaska. When tumors on her eye and on her back hip burst open at the shelter, a dozen or more people came together to get her the medical help she needed. She had surgery on March 4 to remove what was left of both growths. Her one eye will probably not open as much as the other one, but she can see and doesn't feel miserable anymore. On Wednesday, she was transported over 100 miles to the temporary foster home where she will recover from her ordeals. Despite going through so much, she was sweet and gave her transporters kisses!
Norsled has taken this wonderful girl under our wing. We still need lots of help with her medical bills.
Her surgery alone was over $1000 and she still lacks a permanent home, or at least a longer-term foster home. As of this writing, we are awaiting the results of her biopsy which will help us determine exactly what else she needs.
After spending an hour with her, I was completely in love. I cannot imagine how anyone could dump such a sweet and beautiful dog, especially one with such medical problems, into the night drop box at a shelter, after she gave love for years. Some fool gave up a great dog without a fight; please help us fight for her life and her well-being. You can make donations through paypal or by sending a check payable to "Norsled" to PO Box 5784, Vallejo CA 94591. Earmark it "Takotna" or "Polo Fund." Thank you!

"As a rescue coordinator for a high volume shelter I have called on Norsled for rescue assistance many, times over the past three years. They are an excellent rescue group and a most compassionate group of folks. The personal time, efforts and funds that this group gives away generously in the name of helping a dog in need is admirable. I am honored to work with them."

"I invited NORSLED reps Gail de Rita and Cathy Christenson to join our February Iditarod workshop (Gr 2-5). What a memorable treat! Gail and Cathy shared their knowledge and experiences with the Iditarod race and Siberian Huskies with our students. The students LOVED meeting their three big, sweet, soft dogs -- who are extremely kid-friendly! After their enthusiastic and informative presentation, we went to the park across the street. The women harnessed their dogs to a wheeled cart and we enjoyed watching a delightful demonstration of the dogs' natural instinct and pulling abilities. NORSLED's participation in our workshop was the icing on the cake -- a morning of fun learning for our families!"

All dogs in the official NorSled program have been spayed or neutered, are current on all vaccinations, micro chipped, and are heartworm tested. Contact information is provided with each listing.
NorSled seeks to match the right dog with the right home. We ask you to fill out our adoption questionnaire to help us get a clear idea of your family and lifestyle needs. We also do an interview and visit with your family in your home to help make the best matches. Because of our desire to make optimum matches of dogs and families, NorSled does not adopt on a first come, first served basis. Norsled also reserves the right to refuse to adopt.
NorSled requires an adoption fee, usually from $275-$400. This money is used for spay/neuter, all necessary shots, microchipping, heartworm tests and other medical procedures as needed. (Monies collected from your adoption fee which are over and above costs incurred in the care of your dog, if any, will be put toward caring for other wonderful Norsled dogs who have extraordinary medical expenses.)
Attend our next adoption event to meet one of these beautiful dogs or contact the email address listed with the dog you're interested in.

Cowboy- With his baby blues and singing voice one might say he is the Frank Sinatra of Huskies. A charming dog who is a great companion for walks, hikes, bike rides, car rides and just lounging around the house. He is a strong and conditioned dog who will benefit from exercise and companionship. He is a lover of all people and most dogs- and cats, well lets just say he finds the chase to be a source of exercise! Truly a pleasure to have in or out of the house... Cowboy even spent a day in the Army at the San Joaquin Depot and fit right in.

REGGIE - this is a very very smart dog and very trainable, would love a "job." He had some training at the shelter and everyone was sad to see him go. At about 40 pounds and between 1 and 2 yrs, he is part sibe/elkhound/akita/??? mix, very cute with white boots and bi eyes. He plays tug of war, catch, lots of games and of course loves his walks. Someone with an active life style and a savvy home would be the best combo for Reggie, and he'd be better with kids over 10. Did we say HIGH ENERGY, play motivated? In the right home, this little guy is going to make someone a very dedicated companion. Of course he'sup to date on all shots, microchipped and neutered. For more information or to meet Reggie, rescue@norsled.org

DARIA – All I can say about Daria after fostering her for a week is “what a nice dog.” I can’t find many things to criticize, so unhusky-like! She knows her name, comes when called, is attentive and loving to her human bordering on Velcro! She has good energy, wants to run and play. Daris is strikingly beautiful with her amber eyes, and “eraser” red nose (so very cute). She has calmed down a lot since she first came into rescue, walks well on leash, in fact was very well behaved at Pt Isabelle when exposed to many dogs of various shapes and sizes. She just took it all in. She plays well with her foster brother and sisters but really likes to be right beside her human. She’d probably be an excellent running or biking partner. And, she is even perfectly crate trained, goes right in at night and sleeps thru unless the other dogs get up and then she doesn’t want to miss anything. Apparently, like most northern breed dogs, she would not do well with cats and is very interested in small animals.
Daria is a large dog (probably about 65 pounds, needs to gain a few more) but very special, and very beautiful -- meet her and see for yourself. For more info contact rescue@norsled.org

Felicia - This red and white beauty is a real princess and she’s got the paperwork (she’s AKC registered) to prove it. With beautiful blues eyes and playful personality, she is sure to charm you. She’s been doing great at her foster home since she was rescued by Norsled the evening before she was going to be put away - permanently (she had bitten the SPCA handler the day before and never made it to the adoptable side of the building).
At her foster home, she is learning to be better on leash, socialize with two other dogs, run/heel with a bicycle, run with a sled dog harness using musher commands, chase cats less, run on a treadmill, and play a little less rough with fellow doggies and humans.
She gets “mouthy” if she is petted aggressively or is in “play” mode. She needs a strong leader to channel this energy into more positive behavior. She’s got some moves at the dog park including a spinning back kick and a drive-by shoulder bump. She does great with other active dogs who play on the rough side and prefers slightly larger dogs to romp with. She is all play to the point of being mischievous but never aggressive nor malicious in anyway. She is a fast learner and will thrive in a stable, well-defined environment with consistent rules and boundaries, and very strong leadership.
Husky savvy and owners seeking a single dog would be her best match.
Adopted 5-4-08!

Baker - This boy believed to be about 3 years old, is a large Malamute/Shepherd Mix. He weighs in at 90+lbs. and needs a companion who can handle him and continue his training. Baker knows basic commands and walks well on a leash. He enjoys running as well as hikes. LOVES the water! He will play in the sprinkler with the kids (8 and 3) and swim to the point of exhaustion to do it all over again one minute later. He is an energetic dog who would do best with an active family. He loves to go on car rides, so he will try and convince you to let him go "by by" with you whenever you go. Baker's favorite toys are his stuffed animals and tennis balls. He loves to toss them about and it is quite amusing watching him play catch with himself. Baker would love a home where he has room to run. He enjoys hopping and running circles while avoiding obstacles through the backyard. Baker is also a genuinely quiet dog, but when he has reason to bark, everyone notices!
He was found wondering the streets a little over a year ago and was pulled out of the Oakland Shelter by NorSled. Once out of the shelter, Baker went on his first of many journeys to date. Unfortunately for him they involved being homed with good intentioned people numerous times who just couldn't handle him and had to return him to NorSled. He has bounced between adoptive homes, back into a boarding facility (where he was a fixture for a good part of his time in rescue) to foster homes. He has received some training to become a more acceptable doggy citizen, but what he really needs is lasting companionship.
Baker's main problem is that he doesn't like to be left by his family members. His ideal family would be a dog savvy family with older children (he loves them) where someone was home during a good part of the day. A female dog to keep him company would change that ideal family to his perfect family.
You must be completely aware that Baker's separation issues will require an outdoor kennel with concrete pad and a roof. It takes him a little time before he feels comfortable in his surroundings and will want to stay. Once acclimated, if he is happy, he will just bask in the sun. So being stuck in a kennel is not necessarily long term, but is a requirement for adoption and his safety.
If you have male dogs in the home, Baker will initially try to establish a new pack order if he is unsupervised. He will need someone who can continue to work with him to keep this behavior at bay and establish the pack order in the home. Outside the home this is non issue. But again, you need to be aware and willing to work through these adjustment periods while he finds his place and becomes comfortable.
He really is the sweetest dog and will give you his all. He is only a handful if you let him be. What he needs is someone who understands him and can offer him the best.
Baker has adjusted well into his foster home and will continue on as a permanent foster until his perfect home is found.
Only qualified homes should apply!
For more information on Baker or if you'd like to schedule a time to come to Fairfield to meet him, please contact his foster mom Joleen at Joleen.NorSledRescue@gmail.com

Scotty - Beautiful, gentle Scotty just came in. He is about 2 years old , picked up by the shelter wandering around a local elementary school. He does ride well in the car, walks acceptably well on leash but needs some assistance with basic obedience, like most sibes. He is very sociable with the other dogs he has met. Come and meet this sweet boy, he might be just the right addition to your family. Oh yes, apparently he is a bit of a talker (which northern breed lovers would view as a positive trait!).

TENO is a tall, blue-eyed boy with pearly white teeth and lots of energy, very friendly. Amazing how these big dogs are so consistently lovable. New to rescue so we don’t know about how he is with cats, kids but he sure is a looker!! At about 75 pounds, he can put his paws on your shoulder and stare into your eyes!

Khyra is a petite and sweet approximately two year old female Siberian Husky. She is a bundle of energy and very inquisitive and loving. During the past few months at her foster home, she has been with other dogs outside. Her foster home has a cat and she is definitely NOT cat tolerant and should not go to a home with cats. She would probably need to be introduced to “indoor manners.” But that shouldn't take long, given how smart she is. Khyra is very and sociable and loves attention. When she gets her rubs, she really sits up against you and leans on you for more! She sits for her food and is currently working on waiting to be "released" to her food. (Which is remarkable, given how food driven huskies are!) She rides very nicely in a car and is very good with children as well. Khyra is truly a joy. She always seems to have a "smile" on her face....or at least a grin.
If you are interested in Khrya, please email howlinsleddawgr@sbcglobal.net or rescue@norsled.org and put Khyra in the subject line.

Kody is a 1 year old, but acts more like puppy, who loves to give kisses. He is a little slow to warm, but once he does you can’t stop him. He is great with other dogs but would do fine in a home by himself. He is good with children as well. Kody will do best with a family that is northern breed savvy and willing to put some time into training him. He is still learning his basic commands and how to walk on a leash without pulling. He is housebroken and up to date with all his shots.
If you would like to meet Kody please email rescue@norsled.org or call 800-471-5822

Want your own groupie? Think Maddie, a very sweet collie/husky mix who wants someone to adore! Loves to sit next to you watching your favorite TV show, or when you are working on the computer - will try to push your hand off the mouse once and a while for a pet. Like to cook? She is in the kitchen with you! Of course, if you wouldn't mind tossing a ball a couple of times for her - she would be in hog heaven!
Maddie loves walks, but has some congenital arthritis in the hips. She needs to build up to walking - right now at about a block a day. It is good to build up those muscles to keep any dog with hip problems with good muscles - helps keep the dog healthy and strong.
Meet Maddie, and you will probably meet the love of your life! For more information please email rescue@norsled.org or call 800-471-5822

Kira (Ky-rah) - This is a one Blue eyed, one Green eyed beauty. Still a little underweight, mostly because she loves playing with her 3 other Norsled foster brother's and sister.
Kira has learned her place in our home quickly. She is a lover and wants lots of it. She REALLY likes the ladies, but quickly works the mister of the house, smart girl!!!
Kira sits, shakes, lays and stays very well. Eager to learn. Loves to walk on collar or halter.
This girl is very tall and lean at the moment, she has just "blown" her coat, so when it comes back watch out all you RED heads she's a LOOKER!
Still skid-dish of the car, but willing to go, will crate easily, but prefers to sleep next to foster mom on the floor or bed if her foster sister would let her (Nope).
Kira thinks she is a Boxer instead of Sibe, she loves to roll and jump around using her paws ohhh sooo gently, really, she has come a LONG way. Poor Kira was left in a cold, lonely shelter for 4 months before her new happy foster home and Norsled saved her. I think we could have lost this one to a broken, lonely heart. Now she smiles and loves her big family.
Not sure about cats, or small dogs, but if introduced correctly she adapts well with other (3) dogs and teenagers. Small children could be mistaken for a toy, so teenager's or older would be best. Again she loves to play! She also loves to watch t.v especially the animal planet, gotta love the head turn. We sometimes have to move her out of the way she is so tall.
If you have any questions or would like to meet this sweetie girl please contact her foster mom by email and be patient for a response. sseim10371@yahoo.com

Takotna: what can I say? She is beautiful, sweet, intelligent…everything that a Siberian Husky should be. She is a PERFECT dog! Easy going and mellow, she loves everyone, loves playing with other dogs, learns fast, is housebroken, and loves going for rides. Takotna is curious about the cats she lives with, but we don’t know how she would be with one outdoors. Although it is estimated that she is 7 years old, she doesn’t seem to think so! She wants to go! And play! And run! And love!
Takotna is a cancer survivor! As we say in huskyspeak: WooooWooooooo! Since her surgery, she is now cancer free :-) As we all know, there are never any guarantees to life! Not even a new puppy can be guaranteed to have a long life (this is the hard part for all of us dog lovers). When you look into her eyes, you can see her soul shining through. She is a VERY special girl.
We are looking for someone who can give her the love she deserves for the rest of her life. We already know this girl is exceptional. Are you the exceptional person who will deserve her love?
By the way, Takotna is the name of a native village on the Iditarod trail. As far as we can determine, it is an Inuit word, meaning “Place of outstanding pie." And this girl IS a sweetie pie!
If you would like more info on Takotna, or are interested in adopting her, please email sedna101@aol.com or call 707-823-5085 . If you just want to help,we still have HUGE MEDICAL BILLS to cover: all donations are greatly appreciated and gratefully accepted; see sidebar for more info.

Krisee is a wonderful siberian (maybe a little shepherd) that came to NorSled rescue with 8 puppies. She is a great mom and a great dog. She is housetrained, likes riding in the car and is happy just hanging out with her foster mom. She walks well on a leash (doesn't pull) and has some obedience skills. She is great with children. She is very gentle while playing or taking treats. She gets along great with all of my dogs. She loves to play with my younger dogs and flirts with the older ones. She loves to just hang out with me...at my feet, under my desk etc... She wants to be a great companion to someone who needs her.
I introduced her to the cat at the vet...the cat hissed and spit and Krisee couldn't get out of there fast enough...

RIZZO: Who can resist this bi-eyed boy whose loving gaze will melt your heart? What a priceless youngster: playful but not overpowering, sociable with dogs and people. Very nice manners for a teenager; Rizzo must not realize just how handsome he is. We should clone him! His nature is very calm, sweet and loving with a lingering puppy playfulness. He should fit easily into any home, any situation. Approx. 1 yr, neutered, vaccinated, heartworm negative.

This is Bo- Miss Bo, if you please. Miss Bo is a classic Siberian with a thick charcoal and white coat, beautiful markings, and lovely eyes- one blue and one amber. She is about 8 years old and is a mellow girl that loves her walks, riding in the car, and basking in the sun. Rescued by NorSled from a shelter in the Fremont area, she showed signs of neglect that are now being reversed in a loving foster home. Besides the easily treatable hypo-thyroidism that has caused her obesity (Bo weighs in at 80 lbs which is about 30 lbs over her optimal weight) and some arthritis in her rear legs, Miss Bo is in good health and excellent spirits. She has received rave reviews at the vet and groomer, who both declared her a sweet and well-behaved dog. She has appeared tolerant and patient with other dogs of both sexes, and her company has had a calming effect on her attention-needy foster-sister. She will wait quietly in a kennel or yard and has been no trouble roaming free in the house. Bo is not good with cats, though, so will need to go to a cat-free home.
Miss Bo would be a great companion for someone who wants a mature, easy dog. As she loses weight she will likely become more spry, but at her stage in life she is content to curl up for long hours or chew a bone by the fire. If you are looking for the beauty of a husky without the challenges of a high-energy animal; if you want a huggable bear and an enthusiastic partner for a leisurely stroll, Bo is a good candidate. She would be fine as a single dog, or as an addition to a home with other dogs.
Miss Bo is currently staying in the Santa Rosa area, and you may talk with the fostering NorSled member by contacting the Rescue Coordinator at rescue@norsled.org.

MIKAH - This majestic head-turner stops traffic where ever he goes. Mikah's foster mom gives him glowing reports regarding his sociability, manners and easygoing temperament. ROSCOE - TKO! Young (1-1 1/2 years) Roscoe is fighting-weight thin and will fill out with maturity into a big man. Very strong. An Iditarod-worthy puller, who, with some training, will master Northern Breed-variety leash manners with honors. He's sociable with people and dogs his own size. Loves to sit and visit with a person for some good old fashioned one-on-one conversation, accompanied by nice ear and belly scratches. He sat very nicely with a 2-yr-old boy, didn't jump on him, just sat and gave some soft kisses in exchange for the company and petting. Neutered, vaccinated, heartworm negative.
Adopted 5-4-08!

Cool Hand Luke - this beautiful boy is so friendly, all he wants is to give and receive love. He will make someone a terrific companion. He gets around well even though his front paw is slightly misshapen. And he will be good as new after a heartworm treatment (he is heartworm poz but not extremely so).
He loves to play ball and is very strong, mobile dog. Mr. Cool has such gentlemanly manners that he’ll greet you with a big, gentle hug and will stand on his back legs when he’s served his meals. He’s an easygoing dog who longs to warm your lap and your heart, hear your troubles, share your joys – all for the price of a belly rub!

Maude
Alaskan Malamute Female 8 years young
Maude is a happy, boisterous, talkative, and bouncy Malamute. Her age needs to verified by a veterinarian because she behaves like a frisky teenager looking for some lovin', not even close to acting like an 8 year old. Maude likes to be the center of attention and could benefit from some obedience training so she doesn't accidentally knock someone over with her energetic 'hello'. For this reason, as well as her size, Maude would be good with children over 10 years old. She does settle down after her initial excited greeting and would be great for someone who has experience with her breed since Maude is very independent by nature.

The following dogs are available from local animal shelters. As these dogs may be in danger of euthanasia, we urge you to contact the shelter as soon as possible if you are interested in one of these dogs. Our members will assist you if needed. However, Northern California Sled Dog Rescue makes no representations or warranties as to the health, behavior or temperament of any of these dogs. Our advice is to contact the shelter before travelling there to make sure the dog is still available.
In addition, some of the shelters have begun posting their dogs on the Petfinder and/or PetHarbor sites, and you might just find your sled dog on one of these sites.
NorSled keeps a "watch list" of dogs in shelters who made need to be urgently pulled from the shelter. To see these dogs in urgent need visit our Petfinder page.
Tasha is a drop dead gorgeous ten year old husky. She came to us from a shelter north of Chico where she was at high risk of euthanasia. The minute she sauntered into our doors we all fell in love. She is very sweet and very personable, and she loves to talk to everyone. She even sings when she gets really excited. One morning, Tasha had every dog in the shelter howling in unison with her. Something about Tasha just makes everyone want to sing. Tasha was surrendered to that other shelter because she wasn’t housebroken. I can’t believe someone would turn a dog in to a high kill shelter because of something like that. Well we have her now and housebroken or not, she will find a perfect home and has all the time she needs. Tasha has met some other dogs here and she does well with them, she can be a bit overbearing or dominant at first, but after a proper introduction she does fine with the other dogs. If she were to go to a home with another dog they would just have to meet first to be sure they were compatible. Tasha would be a great candidate for a home with kids above age five. She certainly doesn’t act like a ten year old and has a lot of energy left, maybe a bit too much for young kids. Tasha being the husky that she is can’t go to a home with any small animals, for obvious reasons. It’s very important that people are aware before adopting a husky that there’s a good chance the dog will escape easily out of the yard, so be prepared. Since we don’t know her history beyond the past shelter, we don’t know if that’s true with her, but it’s something that needs to be thought of before adoption. Tasha is a wonderful, friendly, outgoing dog and her wonderful temperament and personality will certainly help find her that perfect home.

This gorgeous young dog is at Hollister Shelter, she has had pups recenlty as she was lactating when picked and extremely thin. She is quiet when all the other dogs around her are barking up a storm, very sweet and gentle, can you please take her into your rescue.

MYRTLE is a 7-8 year old adorable red and white female Siberian husky who is as sweet as she is pudgy! Deemed unadoptable due to bilateral blindness she came into rescue and within 48 hours was traversing the property, up and down stairs like she had lived here her entire life! She's absolutely amazing. Blindness isn't going to keep this gal down! She's very affectionate and gets along well with other dogs. Would do well with older children. She loves riding in the car! She's housebroken and crate trained. Her blindness is caused by a bilateral luxation or dislocation of the lens and mild glaucoma so she should have daily drops to control the progress of the glaucoma. Her tail is only about half the normal length of a husky but it's unknown if this is congenital or due to trauma. Please consider opening up your heart to this wonderful girl. You won't be disappointed! Myrtle is spayed, up to date on all vaccinations, heartworm negative and already microchipped.
If you'd like more information about this cutie please contact Wing and a Prayer Rescue at stewball3@comcast.net
The female Eskie is about 8-10 years and currently at Alpine Pet Hospital in Mt. View. We don't know that much about this sweet little dog other than she was found on the freeway with a damaged tail that had to be removed. This dog is a good walker with a brisk Terrier-like trot on level surfaces but doesn't like uneven stuff or grass very much. She sits well on your lap and is waiting to find a place in your heart.

This sweet dog was left at the shelter because his owner moved to a small house and couldn't take him....so now he needs to find a home and get OUT of the shelter!!
"Timber" Husky mix, blonde, 10yrs, may do best if placed with guardians who have previous sled dog experience. He is comfortable living outdoors.
Timber loves to be petted and play with his stuffed animals, he also likes other dogs and children. Timber would do best in a home without cats. He is housetrained and enjoys howling at fire engines.

Nanuck is a nice, happy, gentle soul, he is a 2 yr old, neutered, Siberian Husky. He was rescued when he was a abandoned by his previous owner. He is great with children, people and other dogs. He loves to hike, job and take walks. Some of his favorite things are playing in the water, his soccer ball and ice cubes.
