Please Help Jasper

Hi, I’m Jasper and I’m a handsome two-year-old Husky boy! Did I mention that I am handsome?

It’s important to know that when I was adopted, I didn’t have enough self-esteem or courage to feel good about my life or myself. Things have been tough for me. I was wandering the streets in the Central Valley of California just looking for some food and a place to stay.

Eventually, someone caught me and took me for a rough ride down to doggy jail in Bakersfield. When I got to the “shelter” I was so scared and out of control that they named me “Spaz”. That wasn’t very nice. How would you act if you were terrified and sick?

Things were looking bad and the doggie jail said I wasn’t adoptable. I couldn’t believe they were going to give up on me, forever. Just as things looked as bad as they could be, some really nice people from Norsled came and rescued me. They got me out of there just in time and took me up to beautiful Northern California.

The people at Norsled took good care of me. I even got to live with several sets of foster parents and spend time with other Huskies like me! One day, a new family adopted me and boy, was I home free. But, two weeks later my new family gave up on me. They said I was too much to handle. I said, well gosh…I’m a Husky…I’m supposed to be full of life and have lot’s of energy. They didn’t seem to understand and so, they took me back to my friends at Norsled, who were disappointed and sad.

But Norsled didn’t give up on me, not at all. They gave me more love and foster care and were determined to find me my “forever home” with a new family that would love me.

Well, I didn’t know it at the time, but there was a family that lived in Reno. These people had just walked their 15 year-old Husky, Crystal “Boo Boo Bear” over the Rainbow Bridge and they were very sad. You see, they also have another Husky in their family, named Abbie. And Abbie of course, lost her sister and was sad too. They decided it was time to find Abbie a new sibling, so they contacted Norsled.

That’s where I come in! The very next weekend, Abbie and her family traveled to meet all of my friends at Norsled. Abbie walked with lot’s of my pals, but when she met me, it was magic. Abbie seemed to immediately fall in love with me and so did her parents. Before I could howl, they filled out some papers and off I went with them.

This is a very long story, but I’ll fast forward to today. You see, I’ve been living with my new family for several weeks now and things are great! I feel so much more trusting of the people I meet and I’m madly in-love with my sister. I walk around with my head held high and my tongue hanging out the side of me mouth. You should see me now! Did I tell you I’m so handsome?

Here’s the rub…My parents noticed that I was walking with a subtle limp. I didn’t think it was a very big deal, but I guess I did forget to tell them one really important thing. You see, back when I was a stray and running the streets, I got hit by some huge metal thing with rubber tires. Oh, it hurt soooo bad…I guess I just didn’t want to remember it. But I must admit, when I hear and see trucks, I go kind of crazy and try to hide. I’m still working on that.

So, my new family took me to the doctor because they were concerned. And wouldn’t you know it, I was actually hit so hard that it broke the pelvic bone in my left leg. To make matters worse, since it was a while ago and nobody knew to get me help, the bone has started to mend, but now it’s all crooked. Because I broke my bone, my leg is now severely atrophied and my parents are very worried about that.

This is why I wrote my story. You see, my new family didn’t know I was going to require lots of testing, medications and physical therapy. They love me so much that they would NEVER abandon me. So they talked to those great people at Norsled and asked if they could help? Norsled said “hey, no problem, we’ll host a fundraiser” to help pay for all of your special care.

I love it here is Reno and I’m gonna stay forever. I can hardly wait to get better and play all day long with my sister.

Life is good,

- Jasper
